France's smoker lobby group eyes elections
Jun 6, 2012—With the first round of France's legislative election due on June 10, the country's newly-formed pro-smokers' lobby group is hoping to catch the attention of would-be politicians, according to an Expatica France story quoting an AFP report.
The Union for the Rights of Adult Smokers (UDFA) was formed to defend smokers' rights against what the group perceives to be unfair curbs imposed by the state.
The UDFA says it represents a potential 12.5 million voters and intends to fight against the spread of no-smoking zones and rising cigarette prices.
Chairwoman, Nathalie Masseron, was said to have told AFP that the group wanted to defend smokers' freedoms.
"We are being barred from café terraces, some want to ban us from parks with children, some hotels are non-smoking; soon a smoker won't be able to rent a flat, and there's even talk of banning smoking while you drive," she said.
